The Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (RCAMC) lost one of its oldest members on 24 Apr 2025. Pte (Ret’d) Raymond L. Farley, Stretcher Bearer, 23 Field Ambulance. Raymond passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital, Civic campus, April 24, 2025, surrounded by family from complications arising from minor strokes. Born in 1925, Pte Farley was 99 1/2 years old, and until very recently, led a vibrant and independent life at Jardin Royal retirement home in Orleans, ON.

Pte Farley joined the RCAMC in 1942 at age 16. Upon completion of training at Camp Borden, he was sent overseas to the United Kingdom. He took part in the D-Day landings and came ashore on Juno Beach in June 1944. He followed the army in the liberation of Holland and then Germany before returning home in 1945 and being demobilized shortly thereafter. Pte Farley was selected to represent the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps at the Dieppe Raid reunion 75th Anniversary celebration in France in 2017 and did so with great pride. He spoke fondly of his days in the Corps and felt a strong bond with the military until his dying day.

Raymond was made a RCMSA Honourary Life Member in 2027.

On behalf of all members of The Royal Canadian Medical Service Association (RCMSA), we send our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends.

I joined theCOTC as an officer-cadet. 2 years later I was attached to the R22R in Germany made lieutenant and was commissioned as an infantry officer. I returned to the COTC for 3 years and made captain. I wanted to join the regular RCAF but was taken only as a pilot officer, had to resign my commission and was recommissioned as an RCAF officer. I started to climb the mountain again and my retirement rank of m/gen. was attained after 41 years. Interesting?
