It is with sadness that we announce the passing of former Canadian Armed Forces Surgeon General, Rear Admiral (Retired) Charles Knight on September 1, 2023 in his 92nd year.
Charles began his career in the Canadian Armed Forces in the reserves in 1951 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1955. He attended Western University and graduated with his MD. Charles spent 39 years as a military physician stationed across Canada, rising through the ranks as a seasoned administrator and finishing his career in Ottawa. From 1982 to 1985, he was Commandant of the National Defence Medical Centre (NDMC). In 1985, Charles was appointed Deputy Surgeon General and in 1988 he was appointed Surgeon General. Charles served as Surgeon General until his retirement from the military in 1990. He continued his interest in the Medical Service long after his retirement, including attending the NDMC decommissioning event in 2017 and the HMHS Llandovery Castle memorial in 2018.

C’est avec tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de l’ancien chirurgien général des Forces armées canadiennes, le contre-amiral (à la retraite) Charles Knight, le 1er septembre 2023, dans sa 92e année.
Charles a commencé sa carrière dans les Forces armées canadiennes dans la réserve en 1951 et a rejoint la Marine royale canadienne en 1955. Il a étudié à l’université Western et a obtenu son doctorat en médecine. Charles a passé 39 ans en tant que médecin militaire en poste dans tout le Canada. Il a gravi les échelons en tant qu’administrateur chevronné et a terminé sa carrière à Ottawa. De 1982 à 1985, il est commandant du Centre médical de la Défense nationale (CMDN). En 1985, Charles est nommé médecin-chef adjoint et en 1988, il est nommé médecin-chef. Charles a occupé ce poste jusqu’à sa retraite des forces armées en 1990.
